On World Health Day 2024, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) came together to celebrate the resilience and strength of health workers around the world. The theme for this year's celebration was "Strengthening Health Systems for a Fairer World." PAHO Director Carissa Etienne and WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus addressed an international audience, emphasizing the importance of equitable access to healthcare and addressing the systemic inequalities that hinder progress towards better health outcomes for all. They highlighted success stories from countries that have made significant strides in strengthening their health systems, such as Cuba's universal healthcare coverage and Costa Rica's focus on primary care. The event concluded with a call to action for governments, civil society, and the private sector to work together to build stronger, more equitable health systems, ensuring no one is left behind in the pursuit of good health and well-being for all.
