The Leduc Naturalist, a local organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the natural world around Leduc, Alberta, has been championing citizen science initiatives for years. Beyond their popular birdwatching and wildlife monitoring programs, they've recently expanded into less explored areas of scientific inquiry. One such project is collecting data on urban pollinators. Armed with smartphones equipped with identification apps and simple, affordable pollinator traps, volunteers meet regularly to check their catches and record findings. This data, shared with the Leduc Naturalist's research partners and made publicly accessible online, contributes significantly to understanding the health of urban ecosystems and informing conservation efforts. Additionally, The Leduc Naturalist hosts educational workshops on pollinator gardening and offers free seed packets to community members to encourage native plant growth. These initiatives not only foster a deeper appreciation for the natural world but also provide valuable scientific data that can guide local decision-making.
